Somebody clicks an old link to your site. Maybe it’s from a Facebook post you shared in 2021, maybe Google still remembers a page you deleted. And what do they get? A gray screen that says “Not Found” in Times New Roman, like they just wandered into the server room by accident.

That person was interested. They were trying to give you their attention. Your website answered with a shrug. Most of them hit the back button and go find someone else, and you never even know it happened.

The short version

  • A 404 page is what people see when a link on or to your site points at a page that doesn’t exist anymore.
  • A good one looks like the rest of your site, says sorry like a human, and hands people a way forward: search, your main pages, and a way to reach you.
  • Even better is needing it less, by redirecting old URLs to their new homes and checking for broken links every so often.

What is a 404 page, exactly?

It’s the page your server shows when someone asks for a URL that isn’t there. “404” is just the code for “not found.” Every site has one whether you designed it or not. If you never touched it, you’re getting whatever your theme or host shipped by default, and the defaults are usually somewhere between bland and broken.

Why do people end up on it?

More often than you’d think. The usual suspects:

  • You renamed a page or changed your menu, and the old address still lives in Google, in old posts and in people’s bookmarks.
  • A product or service got retired and its page went with it.
  • Someone typed your URL by hand and fat-thumbed it.
  • Another site linked to you with a typo. Happens all the time, and it’s not even your fault.

What should a good 404 page have?

Think of it like a friendly person at the door who says “that room’s gone, but here’s where everything is now.” Specifically:

  • Your header, footer and branding. If it looks like a different website, people assume they’re lost or the site is broken.
  • A plain, human apology. One line. A little personality is great. A paragraph of jokes is not.
  • A search box. The fastest way for someone to find what they were actually after.
  • Links to the pages people want most. Services, pricing, contact, your best-selling product. Whatever your money pages are.
  • A tappable phone number or contact link. Some folks would rather just ask. Let them.

Can I stop people from hitting it in the first place?

Mostly, yes. When you move or rename a page, set up a 301 redirect from the old address to the new one. That sends visitors (and Google) to the right place automatically, and it keeps whatever search ranking the old page had earned. On WordPress a redirect plugin makes this a two-minute job.

Then every couple of months, check for broken links. Google Search Console lists the “not found” pages it’s running into, so you can see exactly which old addresses people are still trying to reach and point them somewhere useful.

How do I check mine right now?

Easy. Go to your website and add some nonsense to the end of the address, like yoursite.com/where-did-it-go. Whatever shows up is your 404 page. Do it on your phone too, since that’s where most of your visitors are.

If what you see is a blank page, a wall of server text or something that doesn’t look like your business at all, that’s a quiet leak, and it’s an easy one to plug.

The bottom line

Nobody plans to land on your 404 page, which is exactly why it matters. It’s the moment someone is already a little confused and halfway out the door. A friendly, useful one keeps them around. A default one waves goodbye for you.

If you want a second set of eyes on yours, or you’d like me to set up the redirects and a 404 page that actually feels like your brand, send me a note. I do web, you do you.
